We discuss the possible nature and role of non-physical entanglement, and the classical vs. non-classical interface, in models of human decision-making. We also introduce an experimental setting designed after the double-slit experiment in physics, and discuss how it could be used to discriminate between classical and non-classical interference effects in human decisions.

Il presente volume risale alle origini dell'esperienza religiosa per rispondere alla domanda: come nasce il sacro?; in che modo ciò che è religioso arriva a determinare la vita dell'uomo fino a influenzarne le scelte più personali e rischiose, spesso oltre ciò che si è disposti ad ammettere nell'universo secolarizzato della postmodernità. Le considerazioni svolte riguardano l'incontro con la dimensione etica universale dell'essere umano nel momento in cui si imbatte in qualcosa che lo sconvolge, lo trasforma. Le differenze storiche e fenomenologiche (...) tra le diverse religioni (religione greca, cristianesimo, religione primitiva della natura), oltre ogni pretesa sincretistica, non sono definite in quanto descrizioni di modalità di vita e universi paralleli dal punto di vista storico e spirituale, ma come espressione di uno stesso radicamento in una Realtà, che è vissuta come più reale di ogni altra cosa. Il sensus realitatis offre alla religione, a ogni religione naturale o rivelata, l'orizzonte ultimo di senso intorno al quale comprendere il senso del proprio esistere. La Realtà come pienezza ontologica e compiutezza etica è quel sacro a cui le religioni in maniera diversa partecipano. Negare questa Realtà significa mettere in discussione la struttura stessa dell'esperienza religiosa; cosa che non è possibile se non cadendo in contraddizione. Questa scoperta è l'evento decisivo che ha cambiato nel Novecento il volto della riflessione filosofica sulla religione (R. Otto, Eliade, Kerényi, Dumézil, W.F. Otto, Ries), che in precedenza era rimasta ancora prigioniera di considerazioni metafisiche o teologiche. Oggi è aperta la possibilità di tornare a riferirsi di nuovo al fenomeno religioso, di là dagli interdetti del pensiero critico e secolarizzante, ma anche dalle pretese fondamentaliste delle religioni storiche. El presente artículo busca “condensar” investigaciones precedentes respecto de las formas de leer los vínculos entre poesía e imagen visual. Apostando por la mirada en constelaciones, indaga una manera de aproximarse a figuras y paisajes en la poesía chilena, a través de archivos, conceptos, fronteras y aparatos, que dan cuenta de una sedimentación móvil de escritura y visualidad, estableciendo las posibilidades de leer materiales y técnicas en la historia de taxonomías imaginarias.

In Arendt the domestic sphere is the other of the political sphere. In this contribution, however, the house will be described directly. Firstly, by reconstructing some of the different dichotomies included in the macro-differentiation between house and square; secondly by probing the connections and ties that bind house and square. Thirdly, by trying to read the modern emergence of the two poles «society» and «interiority» as a double process of simultaneous expansion and concentration of domestic semantics and domestic performances.

The Radical New Perspective on Paul distinguishes between two subgroups of believers in Christ in Paul’s time: gentile believers and Jewish or Judaean believers. The same distinction is utilised in supporting contemporary Messianic Judaism, which presupposes an ongoing covenantal relationship between God and contemporary Jews that exists over and above Christianity. Many proponents of Christian Zionism, a Christian movement that envisions the Jews’ return to the land of Israel, utilise aspects of both the Radical New Perspective on Paul and Messianic (...) Judaism in support of their beliefs. Ironically, while the Radical New Perspective on Paul is a certain product of post-holocaust theology, Christian Zionism can be perceived as a perpetuation of a kind of imperial theology that brings injustice to Palestinian people, especially in view of a post-imperial South African context. While none of these connections are inevitable, to point out the relationship between these approaches to identity serves to rethink some of the preconceived notions behind them, as well as some of the (unintended) consequences that arise from them. The exponential growth of social data both in volume and complexity has increasingly exposed many of the shortcomings of the conventional frequentist approach to statistics. The scientific community has called for careful usage of the approach and its inference. Meanwhile, the alternative method, Bayesian statistics, still faces considerable barriers toward a more widespread application. The bayesvl R package is an open program, designed for implementing Bayesian modeling and analysis using the Stan language’s no-U-turn (NUTS) sampler. The package combines the ability (...) to construct Bayesian network models using directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation technique, and the graphic capability of the ggplot2 package. As a result, it can improve the user experience and intuitive understanding when constructing and analyzing Bayesian network models. A case example is offered to illustrate the usefulness of the package for Big Data analytics and cognitive computing. (shrink)

Nous avons voulu comprendre comment, à l'issue de cette nuit, Descartes entreprend de fonder le cogito (...) contre tous les vertiges entrevus. Un délire philosophique a décidé du destin de l'Occident, a provoqué un durcissement de la raison. Aujourd'hui, alors que la raison de la technologie et de la finance est remise en cause, que nous remettons en doute la Raison des raisons, il importe de revisiter cette vision fondamentale et d'établir un dialogue avec l'écologie intuitive des cultures autochtones : c'est le cinquième songe. This note makes a contribution to the issue raised in a paper by Popper and Miller (1983) in which it was claimed that probabilistic support is purely deductive. Developing R. C. Jeffrey's remarks, a new general approach to the crucial concept of "going beyond" is here proposed. By means of it a quantitative measure of the inductive component of a probabilistic inference is reached. This proposal leads to vindicating the view that typical predictive probabilistic inferences by enumeration and analogy are (...) purely inductive. (shrink)

This cross-disciplinary collection explores Vladimir Jankélévitch’s thought on love, forgiveness, humility, virtue, bad conscience, remorse, death, reconciliation, music, and religion. It examines his relations with philosophers such as Henri Bergson and Plotinus. The chapters are linked by the theme of intangibility, or what cannot be touched.

In this paper I show how Michèle Le Dœuff’s conception of philosophy as work is central to her articulation of a fresh conception of women’s role in philosophy and philosophy’s relation to other work. In Hipparchia’s Choice (1991, 168) she writes that ‘There is at least a third way of conceiving of philosophy and the history of philosophy: we can regard both as work, and thus as a dynamic, which can lead to and from each other.’ My objective is to (...) clarify this concept of philosophy as work and to show its significance and implications for understanding women’s relation to philosophy and the complexity of Le Dœuff’s thought concerning the nature of freedom and oppression. Kant ha subrayado el carácter problemático del auto-conocimiento en el campo de la antropología y la psicología: desde sus primeras obras insistió en la imposibilidad de conocer con certeza, sobre la base de las acciones, la disposición moral subjetiva, la única que da a la acción un valor moral. Esta dificultad no se atenúa cuando el juicio moral es dirigido sobre el sujeto mismo. A los problemas cognitivos se añade una tendencia al auto-engaño que está activa en toda la vida (...) moral. Si se mantiene la importancia de este argumento, puede emerger una caracterización de la Gesinnung que la distingue de cualquier “intención” subjetiva. Aquella puede ser concebida más bien como una estructura “objetiva”, independiente de la conciencia subjetiva y análoga a una idea regulativa, que obliga a interpretar las acciones morales sobre la base de un principio que es necesario asumir, pero que no es posible conocer. Thirty-four scholars from 18 countries on five continents met in Cairo to debate for the first time the ideals of the Enlightenment and secularism while celebrating the 800th anniversary of the death of one of Islam's greatest philosophers. Muslim philosopher Ibn Rushd (1126-1198), known in the West as Averroës, may be viewed as a medieval precursor of the European Enlightenment and as a rallying point for dialogue between East and West.
